EMBODIMENT OF LIGHT
Kuindersma: “This creation is inspired by my fascination and love for light. The idea that we embody light appeals to my imagination. Light to me is a metaphor for the soul, life force, hope and transformation. The magical phenomenon of the refraction of white light in countless colors inspired me to choose a prism for the set design. Anatomy of Light is set to music by Jacob ter Veldhuis. When I listened to his Rainbow Concerto, a rainbow literally appeared! For this creation I am working together with lighting designer Tom Visser and set and costume designer Tatyana van Walsum.”

REVIEWS

DANCE EUROPE - Ali Mahbouba
..." Wubkje Kuindersma talks of her long fascination with light, and how it serves as a metaphor for the soul, hope and also for transformation in the way a prism refracts light into a myriad of colours.
In Anatomy of Light, she envisages her dancers embodying light, giving physical expression to it, and indeed she has produced a marvellous, visually attractive and emotive piece coloured by human emotions.
The ten dancers in bright unitards each have their individual colour, and also wear loose translucent tops and magically add a further shimmer of rainbow colours. With its long lines, expansive movement and spiral lifts with head arched back, the dance is perfect foil for the sensitive, lush and melancholy sounds of avant-garde composer Jacob ter Veldhuis. it's music full of yearning and suffused with heartrending dissonance, through never sentimental, but rather vibrant and very present.
This aching yearning is reflected in duets of the two main couples in various combinations, with the male duet particularly poignant, Constantine Allen and Vito Mazzeo's dancing full of pathos as they cling to each other. It's as if colours are dying to be subsumed into each other, to re-unite into white light. Kuindersma conjures up a Newtonian universe, not only of prisma and refracted light (cleverly reflected in the set design and the formations of the dancers), but also of action/reaction that drives the dynamics between the dancers.
The work did feel too short at 15 minutes, and indeed Kuindersma's concept was for a second part too, had there been more time."...

"Anatomy of Light can compete with the music ballets of Hans van Manen"
..." Finished or not finished: in its current form Anatomy of Light can compete with the music ballets of Hans van Manen. Through a comparable use of clear spatial lines. And above all because of the precise connection of Kuindersma's dance to Ter Veldhuis' lyrical -melancholic composition."...
